DIY for the Win!!

Flaxseed Gel

I started with FlaxSeed gel because I made some this past weekend. Flaxseed gel is not hard to make at all as long as you can boil water. In addition to the flaxseeds, you will need something to strain the gel through I use knee highs because they are cheap and pretty easy to find. I purchased the flaxseed from my local supermarket but I have ordered some off of Amazon as well. (You got to love Amazon Prime)You simply bring a medium saucepan to a boil and then put the flax seeds in I used about two cups of water to 1 cup of flaxseeds. Once you put the flaxseeds in the pan allow the gel to come to a simmer. Make sure you sure stirring consistently. One the water starts to thicken just turn the pot off and let cool. Warning: It’s a lot easier to strain the flax seed from the gel while the substance is hot but be patient!! No need to burn your fingertips trying to be cute.  If you need a visual, YouTube has so many videos on it. Flaxseeds are awesome for us curly hair girls because it has omega-3 fatty acids. This makes using flax seed gel one of the best ways to get those essential fatty acids topically. I have some in an applicator bottle in my bathroom to use for my wash and goes and the extra that didn’t fit in the bottle I have stored in my fridge. I want to let you know that this gel didn’t have the best hold, don’t expect this to slay your edges or anything. This isnot ECO.

Henna Treatments

I haven’t used henna in a while, but I thought I would add it because it was great for my hair when it was a darker color. Because I’m blonde right now, I’m trying to stay that way I steer clear of henna because this can alter the color your hair. I have purchased henna from Amazon but if you don’t want to wait for the shipping you can purchase from Sally’s or from any store that sells international goods. There’s a great Indian Store that is near my job. When I went to make my purchase, the lady was really nice. She also recommended Vakita oil. My mom really loved the oil, so much so she took mine. LOL. To prep my henna for a deep condition I mixed the henna, some of my favorite oil, and my favorite deep conditioner in a plastic bowl. DO NOT USE METAL! I wet my hair in the tub because I didn’t feel like getting in and out the shower, and then applied the henna to my hair section by section. This stuff is pretty messy so make sure you have a towel down or something. Once my hair was covered I placed 2 plastic caps on my head and let sit for about 45 mins. If you are looking to use henna as a hair dye, then I would recommend keeping in your hair for about 2 to 3 hours. Once rinsing the entire product out of my hair, my strands felt extremely moisturized. Henna is also known to help with preventing dandruff and scalp itching. I’ve haven’t tested out this theory but I will in the future.

Bentonite Clay Mask

So ya’ll know how I feel about bentonite clay. If you don’t, I have an entire post that is dedicated to it. Make sure you check it out if you haven’t already. But just to go over some benefits that I have seen from using the bentonite clay mask, my hair felt AMAZING. It helps to define my curls and left my hair feeling really moisturized. My hair has so much shrinkage after using this product. As far a show I use this product. I like to add water, oil and apple cider vinegar to my mixture for the best results. I don’t measure out the mixture at all, I just add the ingredients until I get the consistency to be like yogurt. I normally leave this mixture in my hair for about 30 mins or until it gets hard then I rinse it out in the shower. Now I’m not sure if I added this in my previous post about this product but it’s messy. Make you put down a towel or 3. This can also be used as a great face mask so if you have any leftover I encourage you to try it out.

Rice Water

So I mentioned Rice water before as well, it’s another DIY product that I have just started using. To make my rice water I used brown rice. I don’t know if there’s a difference between that rice you use, that just what I had available at the time I decided to make it.  The first batch that I made I didn’t boil the water I simply put the rice in a Tupperware bowl with the water and let it sit for a couple of days. From there I poured the water in a spray bottle and sprayed it on my hair before styling. I will say that the smell of this was not great. I also didn’t notice an immediate difference in my hair, but once I have used it for a month or so I will let you know how I really feel about it. The next batch I make I am going to actually boil the water then let it sit that way.

Are there any DIY hair products you are interested in trying? Tell me about them in the comment section. I would love to hear about them. I am always open to trying something new with my hair products. Be blessed!
