A Curly Girls Guide to Healthy Hair – #NoHeatChallenge

Hey #curlfriends!!! Hope you are staying safe and healthy during this time. Today we are going to talk about some updates with my hair… I haven’t done one in over a year so I’m sure that you all are curious. So last year we talked about how I was going to try to keep up with this no heat challenge. I ended up giving in after about 8 months. I actually ended up straightening my hair twice which really isn’t bad. This is me encouraging myself. I straightened my hair in April because I got bored with my hair and my boyfriend had never seen my hair straight in person. (Yes Boyfriend!! I’ll update you on my life later) The second and last time I straightened my hair was in June for my best friend’s wedding. I really could have left it curly but when you are the Maid of Honor, the last thing you want to be worrying is doing hair.

Fast forward to September 2020 I am about to tell you how I have gone 15 months without my using my flat iron. Before I do that make sure you subscribe to my blog so that you don’t miss a moment of the action. I have a lot of things planned between now going into next year so trust me. You are going to want to subscribe!!

So previously I told you that I was in my best friend’s wedding. That was the last time I straightened my hair and it was a whole process. Any time you do want to straighten your hair you want to make sure you cleanse your hair thoroughly and make sure that your deep condition and use a heat protectant and protect your hair. So I had to wash, deep condition, blowdry, then flat iron my hair which took a couple a few hours. My hair is a lot thicker than it appears. Below are pictures of my hair in different stages.

No heat in a Pandemic

One way that I was able to keep up with not straightening my hair was the pandemic. There simply was no reason to put heat on my hair when I’m going to be in the house. There were times I wanted to because I want to experiment with different styles and stuff but I became a lazy natural during quarantine. Which in the end I think that really helped my hair.

Low manipulation styling

As I have said in my previous posts. The best way to grow your hair is low manipulation. With me keep my hair in coils and braids, it not only stopped me from wanting to straighten my hair but it also helped my hair to grow. My hair has been the longest it has ever been. Even time I stretch my hair I can see a noticeable difference. So my advice to you is protective styling and another low manipulation styling.

No Heat = No Heat Damage

The best thing about not putting heat on my hair is not worrying or stressing about my hair getting damaged. You know as a natural, every time you put heat on your hair you worry about if your curls are going to recover or not. I have really enjoyed seeing my curls flourish this last year. The shrinkage is real but I know that my hair is really healthy.

What are your hair goals?

Now that I have finally made it more than a year without straightening my hair, I really don’t want to do it. I am actually enjoying my curls. I am enjoying trying out different products and combinations. If I end up wanting straight hair for a look or something I am going to play with some wigs. My sister is learning how to make wigs so that’s a plus for me.

What hair goals are you looking to achieve? Let me know down in the comments.

September Goals

Hey y’all… I’m back. 2020 has been a crazy year so far… I made all these goals in the beginning of the year, then Coronavirus came in and wrecked the whole world. I never though in all my days that we would be witnessing a pandemic. And don’t get me started on how much I hate wearing a mask…. yes I know how important it is but it’s too hot under there…. my heart really goes out to the people on the frontline and any who has to wear a mask for an extended period of time…. any who this post is going to be my goals for the rest of the year… I hope this inspires you all to finish 2020 strong.

The first goal I have for the end of the year is to be more consistent on here as well as social media … I will be the first to tell you I struggle with consistency…. I will make whole list of things I need to do…. do 2 things off the list and then take a nap. Part of the reason for that is my depression sucking the life out of me… I have days where I have absolutely no motivation at all. The other part is that I can’t tell you the last time I wore actual clothes… if you wanna see some pictures in sweatpants and over sizes T-shirt’s I’m your girl… I haven’t worn make up since February. I just don’t feel photogenic these days but I need to get myself out there.

My second goal for this month is to get back in to my hair routine… I have taken lazy natural to a whole new level this year… don’t get me wrong my hair is retaining length. Lola is thriving but I have not been treating her the best… I went from doing my hair weekly to washing my hair every 2 to 3 weeks and keeping it in a bun. I mean in some ways it helps because I am not manipulating my hair as much but I need to do better. I know.

My third goal is to pick up a hobby. I feel like I need to be doing something creative. Blogging is creative, however, I want to do other things like write a book or start a craft. These have been weighing on my heart heavy lately so I want try and start one or both this month. I love writing. There is something so therapeutic about writing for me… especially when I can write about whatever I want … that was the reason I started my blog in the first place. I want to take my writing to the next level though.

So there are 3 goals I have for the month of September. Are you setting any goals this month? Let me know in the comments below… as always you can follow me on all my social media platforms… simply click the icon under this post!! I love you all the most!!! Until next time ✌🏽✌🏽
